A Monster Calls

Tears, magic and emotions. These three words describe the book A monster calls by Patrick Ness best. The book is a perfect read for both, children as well as adults, and deals with the theme of learning about life. Every night, seven minutes bevor midnight, Conor, a twelve-year-old sad and lonely boy whose mother is dying of cancer, sees a tree that changes into an enormous monster. This tree that has come to life tells Conor three stories and - now it's his turn - the little boy has to tell the monster an honest story about himself in the end. A moving narrative, this books hits your emotions, at least it did with mine. We have the novel as an English class reader as well as in German (titled Sieben Minuten nach Mitternacht) and also the film version on DVD in our library. (Helena Brandner, 8a)
