A Monster Calls is a dark fantasy drama film from 2016, starring Lewis MacDougall as Conor, Liam Neeson as the monster and Sigourney Weaver as Conor's grandmother. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Patrick Ness and was directed by J. A. Bayona.
The story is about a boy named Conor who has to face his terminally ill mother, bullies at school as well as his patronizing grandmother and his unreliable father. On top of everything, Conor finds himself visited by a giant monster which tells him three stories and, in return, forces Conor to tell his own story about his own truth - a nightmare that represents Conor's greatest fear.
Even though I had read the book before, I have to admit I was quite moved
throughout the whole movie. The gripping storyline consisting of the three stories, leads up to a breathtaking ending, which isn't about fantasy at all but rather close to truths of human
existence and to deep emotions. (Crystal Tiki, 8a)
A Monster Calls is a partly realistic, partly animated dramatic fantasy film from 2016. It is about a boy called Conor O'Malley, his sick mom and an unusual guest from the boy's dreams.
Conor has been having nightmares since his mother was diagnosed with cancer. In these dreams a special creature appears at exactly seven minutes past midnight. During the day this monster spends its time as a yew tree in the cemetery behind Conor's house. The creature tells him three stories but the last or fourth story has to be told by Conor himself. The monster wants to know something very terrible and dangerous, the truth about the boy's nightmares.
We think this is a very moving film. Some of you are certainly going to cry at the end. Thus, we really recommend you to watch this film. It makes you realize how important it is to be thankful for everything you have. (Klara Burger and Lilly Schöchtner, 5a)
