Elephant

“So foul and fair a day I have not seen.” This is a quote from Shakespeare's play Macbeth. It's what Alex, a high school student, says before he starts killing innocent teens at school.

Elephant is a brilliant and deeply affecting film written and directed by Gus Van Sant. It is based on an actual school shooting at Columbine High School in 1999. The film stars mostly non-professional actors and their real first names are used for their characters. Gus Van Sant uses flashbacks and recurring images from different points-of-view. The film captures problems of teenagers in their everyday life. The camera follows each student individually, as they walk in and out of classrroms.

The title of the film refers to the phrase “elephant in a room”, which means there is an obvious problem that no one wants to see and discuss. In this case, it refers to US gun laws, teen violence and bullying. (Stephanie Rehrl, 8a)
