“You will never age for me, nor fade, nor die.”
Shakespeare in Love is a romantic comedy with a literary twist. In a fictionalized account of a few months of Shakespeare's life, the film tells about the forbidden love of William Shakespeare and the noble lady, Viola de Lesseps. Set in London in the late 16th century, young playwright William Shakespeare struggles with his latest work Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter. Lady Viola, who is about to be married to the cold-hearted Lord Wessex, is a great admirer of Shakespeare’s work. She dresses up as a boy and successfully auditions for the part of Romeo. Soon she and William are caught in a forbidden romance that provides inspiration for his play Romeo and Juliet. Like the couple in that play, Shakespeare and Viola are separated by a huge chasm: just like in the play, there cannot be a happy-ending.
The film manages to humanize the greatest English writer of all time and provides something for everyone. Besides that, Gwyneth Paltrow is really stunning. She makes it perfectly believable that a character like hers could inspire one of the most inspired poets. (Johanna Fritthum, 8a)
